Well it’s hard to believe the Easter season is gone and spring will be behind us soon. Next up… a little beautiful Buffalo weather and a chance to explore all of the incredible places that our city has to offer.

The Broadway Market had another very successful season with almost ¼ of a million visitors. The market also has a new mascot named “Pork-a- Bella” the pig, come and see her!

The market is open year round, not only during that special time. One thing I realize, being very involved in the Broadway Market over last 18 months, is that people look at the Broadway Market as a place of celebration at Easter time where they come and they enjoy the sights and sounds of the market. Easter is when many stop by to bring home their favorite springtime eats in order to share with friends and family. One person that I ran into (away from the market) said to me, “Oh I’m so sorry I missed the Broadway Market this year!” I immediately answered, “It’s open year round.”

It was during the height of the activities at the market this year that I read County Clerk Chris Jacobs’ article in Buffalo Rising – about his idea to expand the market’s services, scope and reach (see here). Jacobs believes that bringing non-profits and government services to the Market would reflect the successes of other areas of Buffalo, and be a boost to the city as a whole. What isn’t there to like about that idea? Obviously myself or any friend to the Broadway Market would love to see more year destination amenities nearby that would draw attention to this landmark.

In the meantime, it’s business as usual at the market. It will be a busy spring and summer, with lots of activities to look out for. Market volunteers work hard to create these activities for all of us to enjoy. Remember, the market is open all year round, so I hope to see you this summer.

I have a passion for helping my fellow Western New Yorkers and advance the great things that are going on in this region. Buffalo Rising is a great booster and it’s a blast writing and contributing to BR about positive happenings in our neck of the woods. I appreciate the help I’ve received over the years from organizations and people who share my passion and supported me in efforts that put thousands of people to work and resulted in a community give back of more than $115M to Buffalo’s neediest during my days at the helm of AmeriCorps.

I’m especially grateful for the opportunities that enabled me to help cities devastated by Hurricane Katrina and rebuild more than 700 family homes that were destroyed. Back at home, I was able to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience as a coordinator for ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition where we were able to repair, beautify and upgrade homes for an entire neighborhood on Buffalo’s Westside. Other projects close to my heart include a collaboration with Sail Buffalo to build the Cazenovia Boating Center at Buffalo’s Outer Harbor, and my annual Christmas season time is spent at Buffalo’s treasure, the Broadway Market, playing Santa Clause.

In my other life, I am a workforce development, business, marketing, public relations and fundraising professional. Earned a M.S. Human Service Management from Buffalo State, and enjoy my family life that includes four amazing grandchildren!
