This Saturday night, Leroy Townes will be sharing the stage with Ten Cent Howl. This isn’t their first time playing together, and it definitely won’t be their last. Both bands hold that distinct and eclectic Americana sound that has been oh so prevalent these days in the local Buffalo music scene – blending traditional folk, rock, country and blues through a vast library of great original tunes.
Both of the band’s lead singers (Leroy Townes and Bill Smith) grew up in the Southern Tier and now live in Buffalo, and they credit that rural upbringing for their love of this kind of night. The commonalities between these two great bands allow them to “mix it up”, often sitting in with each other and playing seamlessly between sets. While the songwriting of Townes and Smith is one of the main highlights of the night, they will be backed by an amazing collection of Western New York musicians who bring decades of musical experience to the stage of Sportsmens Tavern.
Sportsmens continues to be a great venue for local original musicians to play. Leroy Townes enthusiastically explains the renovations less than 5 years ago (see here) were done with the “music first” mentality. This visible effort has been attracting many famous national acts, as well as highlighting great local bands. Leroy continues his point by confidently comparing the setup and quality of live shows to any great music establishment in Austin, Texas (arguably our country’s music capital).
As the warmer months are upon us and everyone is gearing up to enjoy the long awaited summer, the 2nd floor patio will be a perfect spot (as intended) to hear many great concerts. So, come on out Saturday night to stomp your feet, drink some whiskey (or beer), and enjoy some great original Americana music at Buffalo’s premier local music venue!
