Staff Review by Carol Ann Strahl:
The story of one of the most iconic figures in American entertainment, Johnny Carson, is detailed in this book by Carson’s attorney, confidant, fixer and close friend. It is the tale of a very complex personality who during the 1970’s and 1980’s was the nation’s highest paid entertainer.
Carson could be, in turn, extremely generous, cruel and selfish while exuding charm and hilarity on camera. Much of his negative behavior can be traced back to his relationship with his mother which is detailed in the book. Triple marriages and estrangement from his three sons were part of his real world.
Stories involving many celebrities such as Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, and Las Vegas mobsters make for a fascinating read. His “Tonight Show” years were unforgettable – think of “Karnak the Magnificent”, Art Fern, host of the Tea Time Movie routine, and many more.
A fascinating foray into the world of an entertainer, husband and father.
