After posting on the 2014 Pride Festival a couple of weeks ago (see here), I received an email from one of the event volunteers, Corey Mohr, who wanted to share the latest developments pertaining to the upcoming activities. Aside from the usual suspects that we have all come to know and love, there are some unexpected additions that Pride-goers should be aware of.
“We’re expecting this year to be the biggest Pride yet for a couple of reasons,” Corey told me. “Last year was a huge success, with the Canalside Festival (the Pride Festival) swelling to over 15k people, and this year we were fortunate enough to get Bianca Del Rio as our Mistress of Ceremonies (emcee). A couple of nights ago, she was crowned the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, a lovely surprise on top of her already well known and liked fame. We also booked pop star DEV and a band from Toronto called The Cliks. We’re pretty excited about these outstanding headliners.
“Additionally, last year was the first year we extended Pride into a week long event, affording us the opportunity to showcase the gay community and gay culture in ways we haven’t been able to with the two day festivals of Pride’s past. This year features a Queen City Soft Ball League meet and greet — to start the week off on 5/25 — a Gay 5k, an art show, the Dyke March and Festival in Allentown and finally the Pride Parade and Canalside Festival on June 1.
