When we think of the Albright-Knox (AK), we don’t often think of Buffalo’s youth and the impact that it has on this city’s future when it comes to future art curators. Over the last nine years the AK has attempted to change that perception, by allowing a handful of teens each year to lift the curtain of the gallery in order to discover the art of curating exhibits.
Starting Thursday, May 1, 2014 the AK is spearheading yet another AK Teens: Future Curators exhibit that will be be shown at two different locations: The AK Art Gallery and the Larkin Art Gallery (from 5-8pm). The exhibit is a chance for talented are teens to show their stuff in front of an audience – high school juniors and seniors are given the opportunity to learn the business of curating art exhibits from some of the best in the business. “The 2014 Future Curators worked wonderfully as a team and approached each aspect of the exhibition’s development, from selection of works to design layout, with both careful thought and enthusiasm. The Future Curators program gives these young adults the unique opportunity to experience all that goes in to creating a museum exhibition,” said Curator of Education and Community Engagement Jessica DiPalma.
The 2014 Future Curators team is made up of twenty-one students in grades eleven and twelve: Sydney Bryk (Lewiston-Porter High School), Connor Caso (Lewiston-Porter High School), Lissette DeJesus (PS 195: Buffalo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts), Sarah Fenn (Nichols School), Anika Fors (Williamsville East High School), Clare Galbo (Nardin Academy), Steve Goehrig (Canisius High School), Kari Karsten (Niagara Wheatfield High School), Yeojin Kim (Williamsville East High School), Claire Martin (Iroquois High School), Sienna Martinez (Lewiston-Porter High School), Almisah McAllister (Amherst High School), Jack Nelson (Amherst High School), Rose Rivera (Charter School for Applied Technologies), Megan Rogers (Lewiston-Porter High School), Jess Rohl (Williamsville East High School), Mitch Stepien (Williamsville East High School), Jess Trainor (Kenmore West High School), Erin Vecchies (Lewiston-Porter High School), Teddy Wieleba (Kenmore West High School), and Lily Zenger (Nardin Academy).
