By Brad Hahn – Executive Director Explore Buffalo:
Electric Tower Behind-the-Scenes Tour | Wednesday, February 26: 6-9 PM
Since its construction in 1912, the Electric Tower has been one of the most recognizable buildings in Buffalo’s skyline. Inspired by the Electric Tower at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, there is no better symbol of Buffalo as the City of Light than the Electric Tower. Its white terra cotta exterior that glimmers in the sunlight and is brilliantly illuminated at night is characteristic of many designs by local architects Esenwein & Johnson. While the exterior is very familiar, the interior is less well-known but equally deserving of attention.
Niagara Mohawk no longer occupies the Electric Tower, but traces of its past as their headquarters can still be found throughout the building. Iskalo Development has done an incredible job restoring the interior while revealing and retaining vestiges of the building’s past, particularly the Art Deco lobby that was once hidden behind drywall and drop ceilings.
On Wednesday, January 26, Explore Buffalo is offering a special opportunity to tour the interior of the Electric Tower from the basement to the top floor. This is the first tour in Explore Buffalo’s spring 2014 Behind-the-Scenes tour series. Wine and light hors d’ouevres will be served at the conclusion of the tour.
Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online at www.explorebuffalo.org, or by calling (716) 245-3032. Reservations are required – space is limited!
This tour is made possible by the gracious cooperation of Iskalo Development Corporation.
