Did you ever stop to consider how British Buffalo is? It’s funny, over the years I’ve run across a lot of British ties to Buffalo, but never stopped to consider just how many until the BBC published 10 British Things about Buffalo.
Before i read the article, I was aware of The English Pork Pie Company, and FC Buffalo (futbol club), The British Car Club of WNY, the UB Cricket Club, and even Andy Goldsworthy’s recent installation at the Albright-Knox. I was even aware that there was a British Buffalonian Facebook page floating around out there.
It was only after the BBC lumped them all together that I found Britain’s influence on Buffalo truly palpable (and we can’t forget about Shakespeare on The Hill and the War of 1812).
It became even more convincing when I took a look back at a British Invasion event that I helped to organize in tandem with the Olmsted Parks Conservancy a couple of years ago (that’s when I learned about a number of British clubs in the area). The BBC article helped to bring everything full circle, and even opened my eyes to a couple of new Buffalo-British ties. Check out the article here.
