“The four stages of life: You believe in Santa Claus – You don’t believe in Santa Claus – You become Santa Claus – You look like Santa Claus.”
This time of year just about anyone can go around town dressing up as Santa Claus and get away with it. Even if they’re hopping in and out of bars, in search of merry spirits, as all of the SantaCon Santas do each and every holiday season. That’s because dressing up like Santa Claus, and tying one on, has become an acceptable form of socializing over the holidays, especially when it’s done for charitable purposes. “Aside from a fun, drunken day out, the Santa’s all (for the most part) bring a new toy donation which goes to the Boys & Girls Club of Black Rock,” said event organizer Karina Lopez. “With a surplus of toys and sponsorship by Labatt and Southern Comfort, we were also able to donate a ton to the West Hertel Academy [in 2012].”
This year, the SantaCon Santa’s are doing it all over again. And they’re doing it right this very minute. In downtown Buffalo, the Santas have amassed and are in search of the things that fun loving Santas require to get in the holiday mood… drinks and more drinks (at a host of bars ranging from Bottom’s Up to Privato Lounge to City Tavern, etc.). So you better watch out…
