The new headquarters for the Catholic Health System on Genesee Street between Elm and Oak Streets is staying on schedule for its target completion date of next summer. Once completed, the building will consolidate seven hundred employees into the new facility, which offers great views of Buffalo. The building was designed by Stieglitz Snyder Architects and will be leased to Catholic Health through the owners, Uniland Development.
The $43 million building boasts six-stories, 140,000 square feet, and a four-story 850-space parking garage to the rear of the building, with 72 at grade spaces. By implementing environmentally-friendly features and high-efficiency systems, the project is hoping to achieve LEED certification.
This site has been vacant for decades when all the historic buildings between Elm and Oak were razed in anticipation of the new expressway, which was later, scaled back. Originally the plan was to extend the Kensington Expressway to the south with a below grade system that would have wiped out the additional blocks to the east. Thankfully the plan was never realized and funding was scaled back, resulting in the at-grade system we have today.
