I’ve often wondered why this sort of initiative has not been more prevalent in our city. The initiative that I’m referring to is, in essence, leading prospective home owners by the hand and introducing them to a neighborhood where they can meet the people who live there, learn about the houses, explore the businesses, ask questions, get answers and hopefully purchase a house. On Saturday, November 16th, 2013, a number of realtors/community activists are inviting people to an event at the “Quad House” in Black Rock in order to learn what affordable home ownership really looks like.
Join Sue “Frenchy” Cholewa (activist and property owner), Larry Bartolomei (Nothnagle Realtors), Steven Long (KeyBank Mortgage), Greg Proefrock (Glance Design – architect and sustainable building expert) as they embark upon a joint effort to create a neighborhood filled with people who have a renewed interest in bettering this city and its neighborhoods. By investing in relatively inexpensive properties, fixing them up, and living together in an up and coming neighborhood, the hope is to continue to stabilize streets by creating desirable neighborhoods. The houses that we’re talking about are in close proximity to Amherst Street, Wegmans, Buffalo State, Elmwood Avenue’s Houk Lofts, Chandler Street’s retro/vintage shopping and the Scajaquada Creek bike path.
The team of experts has identified a number of houses that they feel are worth a look, and they have gathered together the resources that can help people to creatively redesign the structures, finance the purchases and discover programs available for first time home buyers. If you’ve been thinking about owning a property, rather than renting, this could be the opportunity that you’ve been waiting for.
