The inaugural Street Soccer Buffalo tournament took place on Saturday, October 5th, on the terrace at Front Park. The soccer gods were smiling on the event, as nary a single drop of rain fell while games were being played.
The tournament was a collaborative effort between West Side International Soccer (FB) and Concerned Ecumenical Ministry. Eight teams took part, featuring players from Buffalo (the West Side in particular), Clarence, and Amherst. The winning team, Manchester Village, is a group of friends who can often be found playing pickup soccer at Front Park.
“We did what we set out to do”, said Mike Jackson, part of the organizing committee. “We staged an event of cultural and sporting significance, highlighting Buffalo as an international, soccer-loving city. We also brought attention to two great organizations–Concerned Ecumenical Ministry and West Side International Soccer. Next year will be bigger and better, with 24 teams.”
Planning has already begun for next year’s event. If you’re interested in playing, sponsoring, or volunteering, please contact West Side International Soccer at: wsisoccer@gmail.com. Here’s video/slide show from the event:
