First there was the flash mob. Then there was the cash mob. And now there’s the Mass Mob. The premise is similar to the rest of the mobs, though the Mass Mob is designed to draw a crowd to a church in need. In need of what, you ask? In need of exposure. And with exposure comes other rewards, such as increased attendance at Sunday sermons. At least that’s the goal that supporters of Saint Adalbert Basilica and other churches in the city are hoping for.
Initial inspiration struck a few years ago when Saint Adalbert Basilica conducted a Facebook Mass that helped to harness the potential of social media followers. As much as it’s too bad that we must resort to this sort of strategy to get people to go to church, we should be thankful that there are some concerned folks out there who are trying to come up with some clever solutions.
Now, the way that this mob model works is, a church will be chosen as the ‘poster child’ for the event. Then, people will be asked to attend a Sunday Mass at the designated church. Hopefully the social media aspect of this will be able to create enough of a buzz that the churches will be able to show off their goods – from preachers to architecture to the neighborhoods that they reside in.
*The first Buffalo Mass Mob will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Saint Adalbert Basilica located at 212 Stanislaus Street in Buffalo for the 5:15pm Mass. Saint Adalbert’s was established in 1886 in the heart of East Buffalo’s historic Polonia as the neighborhood’s Polish immigrant population grew.
