While most Buffalonians are preparing for Halloween, the curators at Casa de Arte are busy preparing a reception for the opening of the art exhibit “El Dia de los Muertos”.
The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that has captured the imaginations of people throughout the world by celebrating the lives of family members and friends who have passed on, rather than overly-mourn them. To honor their ancestors and continue on with the customs of their parent country, owners of Casa de Arte are preparing a celebration that includes live music, offerings of sugar skulls (guests are invited to bring their own) that will be placed on altars in remembrance of loved ones, an artist’s talk and performance, along with a special tribute in honor of celebrated Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.
Saturday November 2, 2013, from 5 to 9 pm.
Artists’ talk and performance on 11/15, 6 to 9 pm. The exhibit runs until 11/18.

It is entitled “Ts’unu’un, which is Nahuatl (indigenous language of the Aztecs) for hummingbird. According to the Aztecs, children became hummingbirds when they died and the hummingbird is a symbol for resurrection.
