Coming to the Greatbatch Pavilion is a symposium sponsored by the UB Gender Institute, and co-sponsored by UB’s School of Architecture and Planning, next Tuesday (Oct. 22). “Building Talent: Women, Patronage and Mentoring” will address the historic importance of the client-user relationship in architecture. Some of the most widely known architects – Frank Lloyd Wright included – benefitted greatly through patronage and mentoring of client partnerships.
The question is, have women enjoyed such patronage? For instance, though Louise Bethune enjoyed patronage locally, she was continually rejected by potential women clients, missed opportunities that arguably prevented her from developing a nationally-recognized practice. Convening an impressive lineup of practitioners and thinkers in the field (see the full lineup here), this symposium seeks to explore the importance of the client-user relationship for women, and how women in leadership roles can contribute to the development of young and emerging architects.
This is of special interest to Buffalo given some of the local angles – of course, there’s the Louise Bethune connection, as well as Architect Barbie’s roots here in Buffalo.
Organizers: Architect and head of UB’s Capital Planning Group Kelly Hayes McAlonie (she developed Architect Barbie with architecture faculty member Despina Stratigakos – associate professor of architecture), associate professors of architecture Joyce Hwang, and Kari Winter, head of UB’s Gender Institute, the lead sponsor of the symposium.
