Redevelopment Opportunity: 235-245 Genesee Street

A set of buildings at the junction of the Medical Campus, Downtown and near East Side are on the market.  Hunt Commercial Real Estate is marketing 235, 241, 245 Genesee Street and 126 Ash Street with an $849,000 asking price.  They are located at the southeast corner of Michigan and Genesee Streets and are ripe for a Genesee Gateway-like makeover.

The buildings, totaling 51,000 sq.ft., were the long-time home of Anthone Furniture.  Napa Auto Parts occupies the one-story corner building at 235 Genesee Street.  There are three historic buildings in all, including charming 241 Genesee Street reported to be constructed in 1851 and potentially eligible for historic preservation tax credits.

The site is clearly in the path of a development wave.  It is two blocks south of the Medical Campus, one block from Catholic Health’s administrative center, and is along Michigan Street Heritiage Corridor.  Hundreds of homes have been built on nearby parks in the Willert Park neighborhood and Evergreen Foundations plans to convert a nearby warehouse on Cherry Street into 50 apartment units was recently announced.
