“Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse built the first hydro-electric power plant in 1895 in Niagara Falls and started the electrification of the world.” – Tesla Memorial Society
Isn’t it time that Niagara Falls and Western New York reap the benefits of the energy that it has created and continues to create?
The following letter was sent to politicians in Niagara Falls, as well as the Niagara County Legislature, Senate Representatives and Assembly Representatives, written by a concerned resident:
To all concerned representatives of Niagara County and Niagara Falls,
I would like to inform you that NYS has spent millions to build a center for Solar Energy Research, Development and Production in Rochester NY through SUNY@Albany. However it is Niagara County and Niagara Falls which is the largest power generation facility in NYS in partnership with the Niagara Power Authority (which pays no taxes to Niagara County or Niagara Falls).
I propose the following be proposed to Albany:
1) The NYPA move jobs from Albany to Niagara Falls
2) NYPA start to pay taxes for the use of land and the power generated.
If NYPA refuses to pay taxes for the land and the power generated then I recommend that a partnership be set up between NYPERG, NYPA, Niagara County and Niagara Falls, SUNY@Albany and SUNY@Buffalo for [establishing] a Create a Center for Excellence in Power Generation & Storage Technology, Distribution, Management, where NYPERG and NYPA and Niagara County and Niagara Falls would pay to construct a Research & Development Technology Campus with buildings for Small Business Incubator. SUNY@Albany and SUNY@Buffalo would partner and manage the Research and Development, and Private Sector developers would build a Corporate Campus with reduced taxation for those buildings being located on a SUNY Campus.
The reason cited for SUNY@Albany creating a campus in Rochester for Solar R&D was Rochester’s knowledge base with optics needed for Solar Cells. However, I think this is unfair and insulting to Niagara County which houses the largest energy production facility in NYS and I believe the Northeast. It is certainly the largest renewable energy production facility in the northeast if not west of the Mississippi. Yet Niagara County and Niagara Falls have paid the price in high NYS taxes, paid the price in loss of industry and population and land value, paid the price for being the home of this energy production facility but receives no taxes on land or energy production… Niagara County and Niagara Falls deserves something to rectify these injustices.
We have seen the powerful job creation engines coming from R&D at the SUNY@Albany Campus and from the new SUNY@Buffalo Downtown Campus. A Center for Excellence in Niagara County in an industry which Niagara Falls has had a long and proud history. A suggested name would be the TESLA Center for Excellence in Power Generation & Storage Technology, Distribution, Management.
I strongly urge you to use the full power and position as our representatives to pursue such a Center for Excellence here in Niagara County.
Sincerely, a Niagara County resident who is sick of getting the short changed
