Transformation of Mulroy Park in South Buffalo is nearing completion. The first phase of the $2.5 million project involved the installation of a synthetic turf on Pierce Field, bleachers, parking, landscape improvements, a ‘green’ storm water management component, and a concession/storage building. The physical improvements are one element of a multi-purpose recreation and community facility featuring football, health and wellness programs, and education spaces. It is located at 890 Tifft Street near the corner of South Park Avenue.
The project at Mulroy Park was a public and private sector effort. The Buffalo Legacy Project Inc. is a nonprofit organization that started five years ago to help build and manage recreational and health facilities in the Western New York community. South Buffalo was targeted as a neighborhood needing additional health and recreational facilities.
“With the cooperation of the Mayor’s Office, Common Counsel, private individuals, and generous contributions of the Niagara First Foundation, John R. Oishei Foundation, Wendt Foundation, LISC Foundation and the National Football League, and Aaron Pierce, we were able to combine the resources available to our community and build a professional level playing field for the all the youth of South Buffalo,” says project architect and Legacy Project member Tommasso Briatico.
Savarino Companies served as Construction Manager and donated their services at no profit. Dave Majewski of Sustainable Resources Group designed and constructed a storm water capture system for the site that will be able to capture and impound the runoff that is estimated at 550,000 gallons per year (photos above and below).
“Now that we have almost completed the facilities for Phase One, we will be able to accommodate schools, youth football, girls and boys soccer along with neighborhood free time for passive recreation,” says Briatico.
