Grant Street has become a hot spot for ethnic fashions thanks to both the incoming refugee populations and the hotspot incubator (Grant Street Bazaar) that helped to get the ball rolling. One of the newest shops to open is Global Chic, which is the second business venture of Louise Sano (native of Rwanda – see here).
When I stopped in to talk to Louise, I was greeted by an associate by the name of Deidre Marquette-Emel (photo). Deidra recently partnered up with Deidre to offer in-house alternations for the clothing that customers purchase at the two shops. “It’s a service that was needed in order to make our customers happy,” Deidre told me. “I’m also creating custom designs for Global Chic. This business relationship works out very well… I get to have a space in the shop to work, and Louise benefits from my alterations and my custom clothing.”
What separates Global Chic from Global Villages (Louise’s first shop) are the accents of different cultures, combined with a modern flair. From garment wraps to sandals, hats and purses, to new spins on traditional outfits, Louise and Deidre are selling timeless pieces that represent fashion statements from cultures across the globe. These fashions are also now prevalent throughout the West Side of Buffalo thanks to the ever-growing refugee population that now calls this city “home”.
