For anyone interested in helping to defeat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, there is an important event coming up on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Delaware Park. Known as the Buffalo Walk to Defeat ALS®, the annual event is a major fundraising effort that also raises awareness of the disease. “Last year, the walk in Buffalo saw over 700 walkers who raised over $140,000 for cutting-edge research and vital patient services,” said Kaitlin Bartlett, Special Events Coordinator for The ALS Association Upstate New York Chapter. “The ALS Association is funded solely by donations, and all services to patients are offered free of charge.”
Each year the walk is led by someone in the community who is living with ALS. This year the “Honorary Person with ALS” is Albert Weech along with his Team “Team ROYAL”. Weech, a military veteran, was diagnosed with ALS in 1998.
The August 3rd, 2013 walk takes place at Delaware Park at the Agassiz Circle Entrance off Parkside Avenue in Buffalo. Registration for the Walk begins at 10 a.m. with the opening ceremony starting at 11 a.m. A tribute ceremony to those living with ALS will begin at 10:30am.
