This afternoon I was on my way to a meeting downtown when I passed by some incredible drummers at Lafayette Square. Instead of being on-time to my meeting I decided to stand and watch the spectacle, as the group was mesmerizing.
Actually, I recognized one of the drummers as being Griffin Brady from Slyboots School of Music (see here). After the session I imparted to Griffin what the impromptu live music did for downtown Buffalo – the sounds of the drums energized the entire square and brought a small crowd of people to enjoy the production.
Not only were the lead drummers, Ismael “Bonfils” Kouyate and Mohamed Diaby, sensational… it turns out that there was an even bigger purpose to the drumming. “We’re drawing attention to our West African drumming and dance classes,” Griffin told me. “We obtained the proper permits from The City to perform here, and we’re handing out flyers to anyone who is interested in learning more about drumming and dancing in Buffalo.”
Not only did the drum session go a long way towards promoting the event, Downtown Buffalo was the benefactor, big time, thanks to this inspirational act.
I hope to see more of this type of music action down at Lafayette Square this summer. Musicians get your permits and play – what a great way to end the day!
