On Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 7:00pm, there is a group of people meeting at Burning Books on Connecticut Street to discuss the grassroots start of a “Worker Owned Cooperative that will produce fruit, veggies, fish, beer, edible mushrooms, kombutcha, bakery goods, and many other food stuffs INDOORS & YEAR ROUND.” These is the type of initiative that, with the right amount of support from a diverse group with well-rounded interests and assets, can make a giant impact on the way that we produce and think about food. According to the Worker-Owned Vertical Farm Cooperative Facebook page, “This production facility will allow Buffalo to buy local through the winter while providing employment to 200+ worker owners.”
Not only is the cooperative talking about producing and consuming organic and affordable food and drink, it is also interested in seeing farm waste used to power further production. The initiative would be operated inside an abandoned factory in Buffalo. Individuals and groups are encouraged to attend the upcoming meeting. Whether you are established in the organic food scene, or you have an interest in the movement, you can learn more about the process as it unfolds and be part of the cooperative on the ground floor.
