Work is underway on Phase 1 of the BMX-friendly Skate Plaza at LaSalle Park, designed by NewLine Skateparks. The plaza is clearly beginning to take shape, and will soon provide a safe place for skaters who have previously had to fend for themselves by skating at various dangerous and illegal sites throughout the city. Thanks to the efforts of The Buffalo Skate Group, an estimated 11,500 active skaters will soon have a place to call their own.
The skate plaza is located directly next to Centennial Pool, which recently underwent a major renovation, and is now open. At the same time, the entranceway to the park has also seen a number of upgrades, including installation of a new rain garden, upgrades to D.A.R. Drive, aesthetic improvements to the park entrance at Amvets Drive, a repaved parking lot that is situated in-between the pool and the skate plaza, and additional playground elements such as the installation of life-size climbing buffalos. Not to mention the new bike lanes on Porter Avenue, that will allow skaters to arrive at the plaza safely without having to skate in traffic. Plus, if parents are looking to drop their kids off at the park, they can bring a bike and head to the Inner Harbor for a couple of hours, or stop by The BarkYard dog park with rover.
