By now most of us are familiar with The Garden Walk and The National Garden Festival, as well as myriad garden related events that have sprung up across the city.
One of the events that is working to spotlight the gardens in the University District is the Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk, where more than 60 gardens and public spaces comprise a walking tour highlighting the diverse neighborhoods where they are found. “This walk is named after Samuel P. Capen, the first salaried Chancellor of the University at Buffalo,” said Martha Meegan of the Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk Committee. “The event takes place in historic neighborhoods with period architecture, quaint green spaces and pocket parks. This section of the City of Buffalo is a surprise to those who visit, often not knowing what can be found here. There is a spirit of community that transcends the neighborhoods to the business district on Main St., Kenmore and Bailey Avenues; where residents and students meet and support the businesses in our community. Through this garden walk we hope to inspire others to invest in our community as visitors and permanent residents. We are associated with the National Garden Festival – we are not a large Garden Walk, but we are growing. It’s a neat showcase of gardens and properties in the area surrounding UB South campus. As you may know, many changes are taking place at UB South and along the Main Street business district, including new housing at the Bethune Lofts and a new project at the Cantalician Center. Come and see why these gardens are contagious – from elaborate to simple, cottage to eclectic, it’s amazing to see some beautiful transformations!”
