City Honors School is in the midst of rallying the community behind an initiative that would see the historic Fosdick Field restored and returned to the campus. Today there is a street and a vacant housing project standing between the school and its rightful future. Restoration of the field would not only give the school back much of its original campus, it would also give the students and the community much needed green space for athletic programs (see restoration project).
As the neighborhood around City Honors continues to change, with growth spurred by the Medical Campus, the land in question is a crucial piece of the puzzle for the school that has been an anchor in the community. Fosdick Field was once the front lawn of City Honors, acting as a welcome mat into the community. Today the Fosdick Street and the phased out housing unit site snub the school, rather than enhance it. The School on The Hill, as City Honors was once known, lost a significant portion of its campus when the field was used as a potter’s field, and then purchased by the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority (BMHA – see history). Eventually the housing was phased out, and today parties at the table include Fosdick Field Restoration Committee, City Honors/Fosdick-Masten Park Foundation, Buffalo Public Schools, BMHA leadership and the City of Buffalo.
The following organizations have expressed their public support for the restoration of Fosdick Field:
– Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus
– Fruitbelt Neighborhood Coalition
– Macedonia Baptist Church & Pastor Herman Alston, Jr.
– Kaleida Health
– City Honors/Fosdick-Masten Park Foundation
– Fosdick-Masten Park High School Alumni Association
– City Honors School Alumni Association
