The recent joint venture between Kenney Shelton Liptak Nowak, Natale Builders and Frank Parisi to renovate the historic Calumet Building exemplifies an emerging transformation of downtown Buffalo’s Chippewa Entertainment District. Once the city limits, red-light district and most recently, a center of Buffalo’s nightlife, the area has recently attracted office users and mixed-use development.
When the law firm Kenney Shelton Liptak Nowak expressed interest in relocating to the area, Natale and Parisi–who have a long history on Chippewa Street–saw an opportunity for collaboration. Carmina Wood Morris served as architects and preservation specialists for the project, which used historic tax credits and followed the Department of Interior’s standards for historic preservation while transforming the neglected building into a state-of-the-art office.
Join the Urban Land Institute of Western New York (ULI WNY) on May 9 for an evening of insight into the history and future of the Calumet Building and the broader Chippewa Entertainment District. The program features Mark Goldman, local historian and entrepreneur, to speak about the history and development of the area, Kerry Traynor, Architectural Historian at kta preservation specialists, to illuminate the Calumet’s national historic significance, and Tom Liptak, Managing Partner at Kenney Shelton Liptak Nowak LLP, to speak about the impetus, challenges and successes of the firm’s decision to locate in the Calumet Building.
