Play Streets is almost up and running. The Buffalo Promise Neighborhood is the first location to be the benefactor of the GO Bike initiative (Facebook). On Sunday, May 5, 2013, from 12:00pm until 4:00pm, Manhattan Avenue, Mercer Avenue and Hill Street (behind Bennett High School) will be closed to traffic and opened up to exercise and activities, including yoga, cycling, rock wall climbing, dancing, jump rope, hula-hooping and there will even be obstacle races.
The premise behind the initiative is to get families back outdoors in order to combat the national obesity epidemic. Play Streets will pop up the first Sunday of each month from May through September, 2013 on different streets throughout the city.
Aside from all of the fun health activities, there will be healthy foods available. Local organizations will also be present, such as Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP), which will be handing out seedlings on select days so that participants can head home and plant their own produce.
