By Mark Kubiniec, President Grant Amherst Business Association:
This Saturday, April 20th, is the Spring Scajaquada Cleanup, as Grant Amherst Good Neighbors concerned about the health of our Scajaquada Creek form the largest contingent of Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper’s annual Spring Cleanup. Volunteers meet at 9am at the American Legion at 533 Amherst Street – bring your favorite shovel, rake and sturdy outdoor gear to join your neighbors and Grant Amherst Businesses in cleaning up our community connection to nature. Sign up online at BNRiverkeeper.org or by calling 716-852-7483 ext. 39.
This Spring’s cleanup will also coincide with the Grant Amherst Tree Planting on Bush Street, using trees provided by ReTree WNY. Grant Amherst Business Association, a longtime sponsor of the Cleanup, has a strategic plan to replant street trees in Grant Amherst, moving one block at a time. Last fall saw plantings on Bridgeman and Reservation Streets; this year moves one block west to Bush Street which is slated to get 48 trees. Next time, the planting will move to Howell Street, then onward to Peter Street then Germain Street. The intent is to complete the planting according to the City’s plan, and get the neighborhood canopy completed to benefit air quality, aesthetics and traffic calming while increasing community space for flora and fauna.
Join us Saturday, and be part of Grant Amherst blooming from the Creek to the streets!
