Excitement was in the air this past weekend when the Buffalo produced film Perdition made its Hollywood debut. The movie, which came in first place at The Buffalo 48 Hour Film Contest, was represented at the Filmapalooza Film Festival in Los Angeles. The local team of Matt Lorentz, Bobby Gott, Christopher Marriot, Chris Scherr, Kyle Scritchfield and Kevin Jackson joined other selected film makers (at the historic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre) from around the world to showcase their films.
The movie (see YouTube video below) is about a soldier who experiences an explosion during combat and as a result suffers from severe hearing loss. His relationship with loved ones becomes strained as he struggles with his life, post explosion.
Increased exposure in Hollywood is vital if Buffalo is going to improve its image and be seen as a friendly city for making movies. The more local homegrown movies that are seen in a prolific film town like Hollywood the greater the chance that Buffalo can be a serious contender for future film projects. Filmmaker Chris Scherr explains, “It’s a great opportunity to show the town what you can bring to the table, and for the networking capabilities that follow. This competition and numerous other projects I have worked on in recent years have shown me that this town is ready for more filmmaking and filmmakers.”
Let’s hope that more local films like Perdition can continue to gain national exposure so that one day Buffalo will be one of the ‘go to’ cities to shoot a movie in.
