When you stop to think about what types of American holidays might attract curiosity seekers in Canada, Dyngus Day would probably be at the top of the list. After all, most Canadians aren’t familiar with the holiday. Then you have the odd goings on that mark the festivities (squirt guns and pussy willows), and the name alone is worth a closer inspection.
The Toronto Sun has picked up on Buffalo’s Dyngus Day festivities, in an article that pitches Easter-time celebrations that take place in the US. Seeing that Buffalo is Toronto’s immediate US neighbor, might news of the bizarre holiday pique enough interest to attract a Canadian contingent over the border to raise a bottle of Tyskie at The Central Terminal’s big tent?
Visit Buffalo Niagara hosted Diane Slawych of the Toronto Sun for a media trip this past fall and has kept in touch with her since then. A stepped up effort to put Buffalo back on Toronto’s radar is welcome news.
“Among the highlights are the Dyngus Day Buffalo Parade, which starts at 5 p.m. (Monday, April 1st 2013) at Corpus Christi church, moves through the streets of the Polonia district and wraps up at Buffalo Central Terminal, where there will be lots of food and drinks. You can also ride the Vodka shuttle and party-hop to more than 10 Dyngus Day sites, and later, see a spectacular fireworks display starting at 11 p.m.” – Toronto Sun
