Over the holidays we will be highlighting a number of members of Buffalo Society of Artists (BSA), so that you might support them by purchasing original works of art. Thanks to Paul Rybarczyk at BSA for helping me put these together. Visit the BSA website to learn more about the institution – one of the oldest continually operating arts organizations in the country. Next up on our list is artist Norine Spurling:
Norine Spurling was born in the semi-tropical islands of Bermuda. As a child she attended painting classes with a local watercolor artist who encouraged her to look at art as a career choice. Her parents sent her to Philadelphia where she studied at Moore College of Art, and later at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Two very famous women artists whose work has been an influence and who studied at these institutions are Mary Cassatt and Alice Neal. After having lived in California for several years and raising a family, she moved to Western New York, where she completed her formal education at UB. She taught drawing at UB for several years, and is very active in the local arts scene. Her watercolors of swimmers are a natural reflection of her early years in Bermuda.
Her paintings can be seen at Art Dialogue Art Gallery and at the new Meridian West Gallery (see here) on Hertel Ave. Her work is also available in Rochester at the Oxford Gallery.
