For years we’ve referred to our history museum as the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, or BECHS. I bet you that there are not many people in Buffalo that could tell you the museum’s full name, because so many people refer to the institution as a museum, not a society. In the eyes of Buffalo, it’s already a museum, which means that a name change-up is long overdue (I’m not even going to mention anything about The Museum District, though the timing couldn’t be better).
As of today the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society is now known as The Buffalo History Museum. Joan M. Bukowski, Board of Managers President, stated, “This occasion marks a significant milestone for The Buffalo History Museum and the community we serve. I can confidently say that the reinvigorated brand will satisfy all of the existing expectations of what our original mark stands for – preserving our region’s legacy- while simultaneously moving forward.”
Along with a new name, and a new logo (by Eric Mower), the museum will be creating new signage in the form of a translucent polycarbonate with raised lettering, lit from within, while using the original marble base. A sharp new sign with an easy to remember name… that should bode well for the museum’s image in coming years.
