October is an exciting time for the Buffalo Society of Artists (BSA). It’s when they hold jurying for new members to add to their roster, and it’s always fascinating for the BSA board to see the variety of artwork that’s submitted. With an illustrious history of 121 years, the BSA has been an important supporter and promoter of the value of visual arts in WNY.
When the BSA was founded in 1891 (Benjamin Harrison was president of the US) no one could have envisioned acrylics, video, photography and installations as part of the visual arts. Yet, all those media are common today. In fact, “We had an exhibit last year at the Anderson Gallery that only consisted of installations,” BSA president Gary Wolfe said. “Quite a change from the oil paintings and etchings of landscapes and portraits that made up the exhibitions of the early days. Last year also had a second exhibit at he same time which consisted of more traditional media.”
The BSA welcomes all artists to submit for the jurying process. If successful, the artists will become part of the rich history of art in Buffalo and contribute to its future heritage. RIch Tomasello, BSA Membership Chairman, said artists must “submit three original works of art that have been completed within the last three years. And a CD of at least six additional works completed within the last five years. Video artists submit their work on DVD. I would also highly encourage emerging artists working in Buffalo to apply. This year we are providing feedback to all artists that submit upon request. It’s the young and talented emerging artists of Buffalo that will carry the Buffalo Society of Artists into the future.”
The BSA welcomes artists of all ages and working in any kind of media to submit their work for jurying. Complete requirements for the jurying process can be found on the website.
Any membership questions can be directed to Rich Tomasello at richardtomasello@gmail.com.
Submissions must be postmarked no later than October 13th and jurying will take place on Saturday, Ocotber 20th at Knox Presbyterian Church in Kenmore.
