For more than 35 years, Just Buffalo Literary Center has brought the world’s greatest writers to Buffalo, hosted poetry events and readings, and supported the development of young writers through creative-writing based programs. Many people don’t realize that we have one of the country’s top literary centers–and literary scenes–right here in Buffalo.
Leading the 2012/13 literary season is BABEL, Just Buffalo’s series which will bring four of the world’s most important–Nobel, Pulitzer & other award winning–authors to Buffalo, engaging local audiences and attracting guests from across the country and Canada. Community members are invited to read the featured books in advance, engage in discussion through book clubs or at one of our Babel at Betty’s facilitated groups, and attend the readings.
Babel kicks off on October 18th at 8pm at Kleinhans Music Hall, with American Author Russell Banks. In addition to Banks, this season will also include world-renowned authors: Nuruddin Farah (November 7, 2012), Alexandra Fuller (March 7, 2013), and Julia Alvarez (April 3, 2013). After each lecture, audience members will have the opportunity to engage directly with the author in an interview-style Q&A moderated by Just Buffalo’s Artistic Director Barbara Cole.
Also, check out Babel-In-A-Bag offered by The Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries and attend discussions of each book over food, coffee, and wine at Betty’s leading up to the event.
In addition to the readings, all of this year’s authors have agreed to do special events for local students, introducing and discussing the world and its ideas in educational settings.
