Everybody likes a good secret. Especially when certain secrets get you into some of the most desirable occupied houses in Buffalo. Each year Secrets of Allentown opens the doors to historic homes all throughout one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city. While walking around these neighborhoods is something of a treat, there is nothing like getting a chance to see the interiors, many of which have not been altered since first built at the turn of the century.
This year the event includes an inside look at the EB Green designed Twentieth Century Club (TCC) – a splendid structure that also happens to be headquarters for the tour and recently received National Landmark status (see history). Guided tours are also available of the TCC. Whether you go for the guided tour, or just want a glimpse of the club’s interior, this could be the one chance you ever get to see this place, unless you’re planning on becoming a member.
As for the rest of the tour, all of the houses are significant in their own ways. “This is a wonderful group of properties,” said Allentown Association board president Ed Castine. “There is an E.B. Green masterpiece and some interesting office conversions, as well the classic Victorian residences loaded with period detail that visitors to Allentown have always admired.” The tour is self-guided and includes a comprehensive guide for all of the houses. Participants are welcome to stop by for a free wine tasting at the Hamlin House/Troop I and are able to take advantage of special discounts at select Allentown restaurants on that day.
*Tickets for Secrets can be purchased through Tickets.com, at the Quaker Bonnet at 175 Allen and through the Allentown.org website. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event. The Twentieth Century Club is located at 595 Delaware. Five of the properties on this year’s tour have never been on before.
