Free Screening of “Won’t Back Down”

By Hannya Boulos:
On Monday, October 1st, Buffalo ReformED will host a community screening of the highly anticipated new education reform film “Won’t Back Down”, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis.
The screening will be held at the Elmwood Regal at 2001 Elmwood Avenue, at 5:15 PM. A panel event featuring local parents, students, and education reform activists will follow the screening.
The film, inspired by true events, tells the powerful story of determined parents, teachers, and community members uniting in the fight to transform their children’s failing inner city school through use of the “parent trigger” law. Buffalo ReformED and Buffalo parents have engaged in a push for parent empowerment legislation that would give parents in persistently failing schools legal power to hold the system accountable and push for urgent change, as portrayed in the movie. The coalition in support of this important movement for parental empowerment has grown to include communities like Rochester and New York City.

This movie is premiering at a critical time in our community. With 28 Buffalo schools labeled as priority schools (among the bottom 5% of schools statewide), now is the time to build a movement in support of successful school improvement efforts. Our aim in hosting this screening is to discuss issues of parental engagement and empowerment, and foster a community conversation around how we can improve struggling schools and better support parents and students.

For parents and communities across the country, “Won’t Back Down” is proving an important tool to build awareness of the problems in urban schools and the vital role that parents can play in the fight for change.
Please join us for a first look at this inspiring film! This screening is free of charge; guests must RSVP to attend by emailing buffaloreformed@gmail.com or visiting our website.
