After our third week of running The Peddler, a vintage-retro and antique market located at the corner of Elmwood and West Ferry, I am happy to say that weekly event has been a hit. Of course I am biased due to my involvement in the market, but overall the sellers have been happy with the sales and the browsers have been happy with their finds. Last week I spent a good chunk of time defending the market from one resident who lives a couple of blocks away – apparently the guy didn’t like the concept and filed a complaint with The City. After further conversations with The City (zoning, permits, etc), it was decided that the market had accomplished what it set out to do – to create an environment that was fun for people to visit while adding a vibrant atmosphere to a parking lot that normally sits vacant.
The Peddler has turned into a market destination where sellers can tap into an entirely new group of people… city dwellers. To see what is being sold is half the fun. I’ve watched people walk away with old wooden skis, a Pogo stick, vintage turquoise cowboy boots, opera binoculars, a kid’s cowboy hat… there are so many unusual items of interest. And since there is not food or coffee being sold, many of the shoppers head into the Elmwood Village to refuel. The owner of Acropolis told me that his Saturday sales jumped up 15% the day the market started. We’ve seen so many positives generated from something that many other cities take for granted.
