This one is a first for me. I’ve never seen a sign that forbade anyone from locking up a bike to a public street sign. I came across the sign on Bidwell Parkway earlier today and got a chuckle to think that someone actually went out and bought such a bike ‘unfriendly’ deterrent.
I’m pretty sure that the space of land situated between a public sidewalk and the street is still considered City right of way. Regardless, you can’t live along a public parkway and not expect to have someone eye up your street sign for bike protection. The wording clearly says, “Please THIS IS NOT A BIKE RACK”. At least there’s not an exclamation mark.
I could understand if the sign was located inside the little rock garden, but it’s not. And even if the occasional flower gets trampled, it’s still fair game for cyclists to use street sign poles to lock up their bikes as far as I know. Maybe the sign should have read, “Please mind the flowers when locking up your bike.”
As this city attempts to become more bike-friendly it’s not the nicest message to send to people visiting our neighborhoods.
