We’ve all heard of Flash Mobs. We’ve seen the public pillow fights, the undie Metro Rail rides… the dances, etc. This evening there is a scheduled Flash Mob that will not only be fun, it serves a productive purpose. The point of the Buffalo Reading Invasion is to get people to pick up a book and… you guessed it… read! We all know that the majority of people don’t read enough books these days. With the advent of TV, smart phones, video games et al reading is playing second and third fiddle, which is unfortunate.
If you are of the belief that the good word of reading must be spread, then head over to Bidwell Parkway from 7pm-8pm this evening and bring a book with you. Grab a chair, or a blanket, your reading glasses, a cup of coffee, what have you… just show up, sit down, open a book and start reading. Bring a friend, or your book club, or your dog… it doesn’t matter who you bring, as there will be others to read alongside. Prepare yourself for a quiet, peaceful, group reading session.
If you have kids, bring them along for an hour of story telling on Bidwell – west side of Elmwood. According to organizers, “The purpose of the event is to celebrate and enjoy the act of reading, to acknowledge the rich and diverse literary community here, and to remind the rest of Buffalo that reading is still a viable and important part of the fabric of our city.”
*If all goes well, there will be more Invasions planned for the coming months. More information can be found at www.buffaloreadinginvasion.wordpress.com. Or try Facebook.
