By Andrea Todoro (West Buffalo Charter School):
Buffalo’s neighborhoods are now full of children’s laughter, games of tag and bike riding. That’s right–summer vacation is here. While your child most likely spends his or her days thinking of all the fun to be had, parents are often left worrying about what the next school year may hold. Where will my child attend school? What programs will be offered by the school? Will he or she learn all that they need to become successful members of society?
If you find yourself asking these questions–do not panic. You have a wonderful option right here on Buffalo’s West Side. West Buffalo Charter School (see BRO article) located at 113 Lafayette Avenue will be opening its doors for students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade in August 2012. While we currently have a waiting list for students entering Kindergarten, we have not yet reached full enrollment for 1st and 2nd grade. So what does West Buffalo Charter School have to offer you and your child?
West Buffalo Charter School will offer a small, safe, secure learning environment for students. With class sizes at 18 students per classroom, West Buffalo Charter School will be able to provide a high student to teacher ratio. This will allow for differentiated, small group instruction throughout the day. Your child will work closely with the classroom teacher and be provided targeted, intensive instruction based on his or her strengths and weaknesses. Through this method of teaching, children will surely be given the tools to succeed!
West Buffalo Charter School will focus on language acquisition, literacy instruction, and reading proficiency. Partnered with Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center, students will participate in the Language to Literacy Program on a daily basis. This program provides a “back to the basics” approach for language development and reading skills. The curriculum is also aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards ensuring that students will be on track to succeed on all NYS assessments.
West Buffalo Charter School is looking forward to becoming a part the West Side community. During recent months, West Buffalo Charter School has begun to reach out to various community agencies and businesses to share our school’s vision and develop collaborative relationships. We have formed partnerships with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Massachusetts Avenue Project, and D’Youville College. By partnering with these agencies, we hope to bring the westside community and its amazing, diverse culture to our students.
From musicians visiting classrooms to having students create a garden– these partnerships will truly foster a win-win situation for all involved. In addition to the partnerships already named, West Buffalo Charter School has recently chosen to use area seamstresses to create vests that students will wear as part of the West Buffalo Charter School uniform. WBCS truly believes in supporting the local economy and business owners. So, as one school year comes to a close and you begin to think ahead to the next, please consider West Buffalo Charter School. WBCS is proud to be a part of the west side.
