The four architectural and design teams in competition to design the new University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus have submitted their ideas for what the complex could be. The competition is part of a $375 million plan to relocate the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. It will be built at the southeast corner of Main and High Streets. Partially funded by a NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant, the project is part of the next phase of the UB 2020 plan.
Below are just ideas at this point. The architecture firms are each competing to win the contract to design the complex which is expected to be built in two phases. The final design is likely to be much different than seen here. Firms were asked to give an “example” of the building they might propose if given the design contract. The selection committee is looking at the firms’ process, sensibility to the setting and surrounding neighborhoods, and expertise.
Competing teams and their initial ideas are:
A fifth team — Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Gensler Associates — withdrew from the competition after being awarded commissions to be constructed at the same time as the UB medical school building.
The winner of the competition will be announced in early May. A public reception and exhibition of all the proposals will be presented at that time.
After selection the winning team will work more closely with UB officials and others to refine their design. Work on the new complex is expected to start next year.
