Buffalo Rising

The Buffalo River: Seeing is Believing

If you had shown me this photo and asked me what it was and where it was, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you. That’s because last fall Mutual Riverfront Park (see background) was nothing more than a vacant plot of land along the Buffalo River. Yes, there was a plan, but how often do we see a plan materialize virtually overnight? In this case (photo) we now see a building on the left that pays tribute to the Historic Mutual Rowing Club. The recreated building will ‘once again’ house kayaks, canoes, rowboats, etc. The building seen on the right has been built to house a museum and concessions. There will also be a dining terrace, an events lawn, an outdoor classroom/amphitheater, a boat launch, docks, a plaza, seating, a rain garden… making Mutual Riverfront Park a true waterfront destination.

Thanks to Peg Overdorf’s vision and relentless drive, we are seeing this project come to fruition sooner rather than later. Combine this with all of the action that we’ve seen at Riverfest Park (a five minute walk away) and boaters and bikers will have multiple venues and activities to attend this summer in close proximity to one another. These sites are also within a short walk/ride of the Inner Harbor and the Outer Harbor.
*The project is being funded 100% by the New York Power Authority, and landscape architect is Dean Gowen (through Hatch Associates). The project manager is Larry Zamojski.
