After 3 ½ years at its 19 Wadsworth Street home, Sugar City is going to be temporarily heading out with a bang. The building recently sold and the new owner will not be keeping the volunteer-run DIY art cooperative as its tenant. In order to keep spirits up and get a positive head start on their next chapter, the members of Sugar City are hosting “30 Days of Awesome,” a month-long series of events.
The celebration kicked off last night with the Fun-A-Day exhibit. The show featured a series of projects where creators picked something fun and did it every day throughout the month of February. Exhibits and events will continue throughout the next month and will feature a little bit of everything, including musical performances, film screenings, workshops in poetry and drawing, art exhibits, a small press fair, a board game night, and a combined rock show and pancake breakfast, “Rock-A-Pancake-Athon.”
Those interested in making the most of the 30 Days of Awesome can stop by Sugar City to get a punch card to take to each event. Twenty-five punches on your card will win you an artist print to show off your support. If you can’t make it to 25, you can still redeem whatever punches you earn for raffle tickets for the last show on April 13, which will feature the music of Calvin Johnson with the Hive Dwellers, Curious Mystery, Nicky Gordon and the Hall of Fame, and Mallwalkers.
The volunteers of Sugar City will be putting most of their energy into the 30-day celebration while they also begin the search for their next home. According to Aimee Buyea, they will be researching other national all-ages spaces and meeting with realtors, city officials and other local allies. “We are definitely looking for a landlord that is into the Buffalo community and understands the multiple uses we have for a space,” Buyea said. “We are really glad that we’ve made it 3 ½ years as a volunteer-run cooperative and that amount of time has proven that the community needs an organization like ours.”
