St. Bonaventure played Florida State tough all game. They jumped out to an early lead. They held the lead at halftime.
They held the lead until just over 5 minutes left in the game when, after a 16-2 run, Florida State finally found a way to lead.
The Bonnies, a #14 seed, were trying to win their first NCAA tournament game since 1970. But it didn’t happen. While trailing by 3 points with 10 seconds left, Da’Quan Cook made a strange – and fateful – decision to drive the lane and take a 2 point shot. It missed. He got the ball back and, instead of kicking it out for a game-tying 3 point attempt, he took another 2 point shot. Missed again.
And it was over. Bonnies lost 66-63.
But, here’s the thing: the refs absolutely blew an easy call. After the Bonnie hit a 3 point shot, Florida State took the ball to inbound it from under their own basket. After a pump fake, the Seminole who was inbounding the ball clearly and conspicuously steps over the out of bounds line and onto the court. A violation that should have resulted in the ball going back to St. Bonaventure. It should have been Bonnies ball, down 2 points with 26.6 seconds left. But it wasn’t. There was no whistle as the refs missed it.
The video of the inbound violation is below (and clear as day). Tough break for the Bonnies.
