By Jessica Edwards:
Have you ever wondered what you’d have to do to get your name on the side of a building around town? In Charles Rand Penney’s case it was his love of art and his collector’s eye that landed him the prestigious honor. If you’re already familiar with Charles Rand Penney and his storied life, then you might want to come out this week (Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25) for the last public sale of items from his personal collection. What may not sound like such a big deal actually is because Penney traveled the world collecting thousands of unique pieces including many from right here in Buffalo. The sale is being touted as an event in which collectors can rummage through “vintage posters, paintings, and sculptures by artists of local, national, and international repute; “Americana” and folk art from many regions of the U.S.; ethnographic artifacts from North and South America, the Caribbean, Asia, and other locales; World’s Fair memorabilia encompassing New York City’s several expositions (1853, 1939, 1964-65), Chicago’s 1893 Columbian Exposition, and more; advertising; decorative art, furnishings, and personal items from Dr. Penney’s homes. Also a huge volume of Pan Am collectables and other Buffalo related items.”
Although the Burchfield-Penney Art Center houses many exhibits, this may be a rare opportunity to view and purchase unique pieces of history. The sale is being held at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site’s newly constructed Carriage House. During this special event there will be a discount offered for new memberships – this is also a chance for visitors to see all of the recent developments that have taken place at the center over the last couple of years. So, even if nothing strikes your fancy you can still enjoy the day touring a newly renovated historic landmark!
