By Joanna Gillespie:
PechaKucha Night Buffalo is an ongoing event series affording creative people of all disciplines an opportunity to share their current curiosities, past projects, or future aspirations. Think “show and tell” for grown-ups, but “show and tell” in a uniquely concise format. What is unique about an evening of PechaKucha presentations is that each speaker is only allowed to speak for precisely 6 minutes and 40 seconds – that’s 20 images each shown for 20 seconds. This “20×20” presentation is fast-paced and compelling. No aimless meandering or prolonged pontificating. The presenters really get to the point.
The name “PechaKucha” (pronounced in thee syllables, “peh-chak cha”) is Japanese for “chit-chat.” When Tokyo-based architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein trademarked the international PechaKucha franchise in 2003, they conceived of PechaKucha Night as an occasion for networking and idea sharing in a venue filled with busy conversation.
Launched in 2006 by Nick Bruscia, Peter McCarthy and Heamchand Subryan, PechaKucha Night Buffalo is part of a global phenomenon. PechaKucha Night now appears in 468 cities around the world, from Buffalo to Beijing and beyond.
PechaKucha Buffalo, in conjunction with Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, is pleased to announce the latest installment of the series, PechaKucha Night: Buffalo Vol. 12. This special evening of fast-paced presentations by twelve artists will begin at 7:30 pm on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Asbury Hall in Babeville at 341 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, NY. Admission is $5.00 at the door ($3.00 for students and Hallwalls members) and a cash bar will be available.
This installment of PechaKucha Night will bring together twelve artists from as near as Buffalo and Canada and as far as Kenya and the United Kingdom, showing work in photography, video, painting, drawing, sculpture, new media, cultural anthropology, graffiti, design, and architecture.
PNK vol. 12 features the following prominent and creative minds: digital media cultural anthropologist Stephanie Rothenberg (Visual Studies Associate Professor, University at Buffalo); the multi-disciplinary collaboration of science and art known as virocode (currently on view at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery); London-based video artist and 2012 Hallwalls Artist in Residence, Sarah Baker; internationally-regarded photographer and recent chart-topping jazz producer, Brendan Bannon; widely admired 2010 Beyond/In WNY exhibiting artists, Adam Weekley (drawing, painting, installation) and David Mitchell (photography, video, sculpture, drawing and installation); nationally-exhibited and recent Best in Show awardee from CEPA Gallery, photography/video artist Jan Nagle; sensorial provocateur and artist, Millie Chen (Visual Studies Professor, University at Buffalo); internationally-exhibited installation artist, Warren Quigley; architect and designer Robert Garlow; painter, illustrator and Moleskine sketchbook artist extraordinaire, Tom Holt; and a special collaborative presentation by local photographer Molly Jarboe and cultural theorist and writer Allen Shelton.
PechaKucha Buffalo, now a staple on Buffalo’s creative calendar, is a non-profit organization hosting fun and informal gatherings about four times a year to benefit local arts organizations. We hope you’ll join us for a fun evening of cocktails and free learning!
