Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Staff Review by Michelle Snyder:
The first line of Daughter of Smoke and Bone grabs you and doesn’t let go: “Once upon a time an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.”
Laini Taylor has an imagination that knows no bounds and the world she created is rich and beautiful. Daughter of Smoke and Bone opens in the mysterious and beautiful city of Prague, following the life of Karou, an art student with natural blue hair, unexplained eye tattoos on her palms, a necklace of wishes, and strange connections to another world. Karou has always felt that she’s different (besides the fact that she lives with Chimera), but has never been able to understand what makes her feel so out of place. When she meets the strange and beautiful seraphim Akiva, Karou finds herself pulled into a world of angels and demons, secrets and romance, and most importantly, truth and lies.
Beautifully written and compelling, Daughter of Smoke and Bone is an unexpected gem with a complex and unique mythology that’s a joy to read. This book is cataloged as YA fiction, but it eclipses beyond the Young Adult label. This is a literary work of art that should be appreciated by book connoisseurs, both young and old. The wait for the next book in the series will be tremendously long.
