As I have yet to see any renderings pertaining to the potential lighting of the Skyway, I figured that I would throw out this image of a similar-looking lit structure in Miami. Commentor ‘buffaluv’ added a link to this image following a post that I had written in which I pointed out the burned out neon on the (then) HSBC Center (see post). By the way, it would be nice to see the neon fixed at the top of the arena – remember the multi-colored neon waves? With new Sabres’ ownership and new stadium branding by First Niagara, the neon would really showcase the arena nicely at night (as it once did, adding a different lighting element to the skyline).
Back in September WCP posted a notice calling for artwork submissions for the Skyway and Grain Elevators. We are all well aware of the bubbling Skyway controversies over the years – do we light it up? Knock it down? Turn it into our own version of the High Line in NYC? The lead photo does a good job of giving us a glimpse of what it might look like to light up the Skyway… without these types of images it’s hard to imagine what it would look like. I remember when people were asking similar questions about the lighting of the Peace Bridge. The end result proved to be one of overall enthusiasm and pride. Would the lighting of the Skyway garner the same sort of passion? Would the Jetsonian structure become one of pride, rather than one of anxiety?
