The first annual PUCCS (Program for Understanding Childhood Concussion and Stroke) Charity Hockey Tournament will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at Holiday Twin Rinks (3465 Broadway Street, Cheektowaga), with net proceeds funding childhood concussion and stroke research.
Six adult hockey teams will play in an all-day USA Hockey-endorsed tournament – the team that raises the most funds will play the Sabres Alumni Team in an exhibition match at 5:00 pm that evening. Admission is free but spectators are encouraged to make a donation to PUCCS.
The Sabres Alumni players will have an autograph session in between periods of their game, at approximately 5:45 pm. A silent and live auction will be held at the tournament – auction items are also available for bidding online at PUCCS.org and include jerseys signed by the Detroit Red Wings, Ryan Miller, Thomas Vanek, Jaromir Jagr, and Henrik Zetterberg.
Sponsors to date include Dent Neurological Institute, Cellino & Barnes, Kaleida Health, Independent Health, the Josephine Goodyear Foundation, and Niagara Metals. In-kind donors and partners include the Buffalo Regals, New Buffalo Shirt Company, New Era Cap, and WNY Hockey Report. Volunteers from UB Neurosurgery and UB School of Nursing will staff the event.
