Mural Alert: Downtown Gets a Refresher

Crowley Webb is getting into the mural game. The advertising agency has commissioned a giant mural to be painted on the side of the City Grill building (Main Street between Swan and Seneca) to mark the agency’s 25th anniversary. The mural is reminiscent of iconic images found on retro pro-industry propaganda, with a modernized look of course.

Thankfully the mural is more a work of art rather than an in-your-face ad campaign that is so common in this day and age. After being bombarded for years with obnoxious billboards that make people cringe at the blatant ugliness cast upon our city, Crowley Webb has initiated an impressive testament to the company while sharing an admirable image with the public. This work of art will join the ranks of so many old and faded painted commercial murals that are still visible on the city’s building stock. I would also like to think that the mural’s message is two-fold: in part directed towards the agency while also reflecting the city’s past and present work ethic.

Work on the mural began today. When I last spoke to artists Mike Manna and Steve Rovner they were waiting for a scissor lift to be delivered to the site. Once the lift arrives the mural will be underway.
