When deciding where to have lunch today, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center came to mind. I had not been to the museum for a while, but I heard that there was a fairly new eatery inside called Moura’s. It was time to pay a visit. More than anything else, I wanted to have lunch up on the second floor terrace, overlooking the Albright-Knox. It was a beautiful day and the terrace was calling my name. I was hoping that the food would be on par with the surroundings.
Moura’s is as bright and vibrant as any restaurant around. The cafe windows allow for boundless natural light to enter the space. But as much as the dining area was attractively modern, I wasn’t interested in sitting inside. Rather I wanted to grab my food and head up and out onto one of the most underutilized patios in the city. For some reason I don’t think anyone realizes that food from the cafe can be brought outside – otherwise the patio would be packed all the time (or so one would think).
Foods of interest include the chicken souvlaki, hummus, Greek veggie wraps… smokehouse ham and roast turkey sandwich, Greek pasta and macaroni seafood salads… and enough coffees and lattes to keep any mocha or chino-lover happy for a long, long time. All of the selections that I saw prepared looked great. And my tuna sandwich was perfect – they even had hot peppers and a hoagie roll, which made me happy.
It may be nearing the end of the summer season, but there is still time to grab a coffee, a smoothie… or even a soup of the day out on the terrace. There a nine salads on the menu, eight wraps and deli sandwiches. There are healthy and hardy options, and daily specials. Museum restaurants obviously have the advantage of having plenty of rotating installations to check out before and/or after eating. There’s even a cool museum shop to visit while you’re there. Even if you’re not planning on attending museum exhibits, the cafe atmosphere is always worth the visit.
